Lennox had the addresses of all twenty-nine Police and Crime Commissioners on Harold Thomas’ list. He had a place to start; these were the top-ranking police personnel in the country.

Lennox put the USB stick into Amelie’s laptop and downloaded it, adding it to the rest of the information already on it. He had enough intel on the stick to make people ask questions, to make life very difficult for the assistant commissioner.

Hearing the front door close, he looked up from the monitor to see Amelie.

He had everything ready. “Did you get them?”

“Yeah, I got the last two they had.” Amelie hurried over with two plastic boxes containing USB sticks.

“Okay, we’re making an insurance policy,” he said, ripping the plastic packaging apart. He slid one into the USB port on his laptop and transferred all the files onto the first stick, then the second. “This way, if either of us are caught short, we’ll have some leverage. I hate having to do this, but it’s the only way to safeguard ourselves.”

“Here.” Amelie handed him two envelopes. “Where do you want me to keep them?”

Lennox handed an envelope with a USB stick in it back to her. “I don’t want to know where yours is. Give it to a friend, relative, whoever, but make sure it’s someone you trust. And I’ll do the same with mine.”

“Won’t we be getting them involved too?”

“Not if they don’t know what’s inside,” he replied, not quite believing what he was saying. “When you give it to them, tell them to keep it safe and only send it if something happens to you. Here, the address to write to on the envelope is here.”

He waited while Amelie wrote the address on the envelope.

“Are you sure about that? Is this the best place to send it?”

“Where else are we going to send it?”

“The police, I don’t know,” Amelie said, a little confused.

“Baby, how can we send this to the police? We’ve got evidence on here of a massive conspiracy involving the highest-ranking policemen in the country.”

“Shit, yeah, sorry, I wasn’t thinking.”

“That’s okay.” He smiled. “This company will know what to do with the information, if they need to. Remember, this is just an insurance policy. They won’t play fair, if they do find us. This will make them think twice about hurting anyone, okay?” He saw the look of concern on Amelie’s face. “Come here.”

He held her tight, knowing how much danger he’d put her in by involving her. The last thing he wanted to do was hurt her, but he needed her help. They still had a lot of information to retrieve from Harry’s laptop. Lennox hated the thought of her moving in with that bastard, Harry, but it was a necessary evil.

“All of this will be worth it, right?” she asked, her cheek on his shoulder.

“Yeah, of course it will, Am,” he replied, certain it would work out eventually. “These fuckers will get what’s coming to them.”

“And what about us? Will we get what’s coming to us?”

He pulled away from the embrace.
